Fastening Off

You will see the words fasten off and secure the ends at the end of most patterns. You need to fasten off the yarn and secure it so the stitches will not unravel. All you need to do is the following:

1. Cut the yarn a few cm/inches from the last stitch made.

2. With your hook, pull the cut end through the last stitch made until it is all the way through. You now have a finished knot. Tighten the knot by pulling on the tail and hide the loose yarn end to the back of your work (thread the loose end into a tapestry needle and insert the needle into the back loop of the next stitch, weave the leftover tail through the stitches of your work to hide it). This way the knot will remain invisible and your work will have neatly finished appearance.

Fastening off doesn't always mean that you are going to finish a project. If you are changing the colour, you will be asked to fasten off the previous colour yarn.
