In order to crochet a chain stitch, you need to start with a slip knot.
1. Yarn over.
2. Draw up a loop through the slip knot - you've just completed one chain stitch.
Continue repeating steps 1 and 2 until you reach the desired number of chain stitches.
Note: Don't count the slip knot or the chain which is currently on your hook as chain stitches.
The resulting row of chains is called a foundation chain.
The chain stitch is also used to produce spaces and loops in your work.
